THE FACTS:

Sitting for prolonged periods of time can be detrimental to your health. How bad could it be? Well, here are just SOME of the things that you are more likely to get from sitting too long:

  • Varicose veins
  • Dementia
  • Heart disease
  • High cholesterol
  • Stroke
  • Chronic back pain
  • Cancer

If you sit for long periods at work and you do not exercise regularly, you are more likely to be tired when you get home from work. This will lead to you sitting at home, which usually creates bad habits like snacking, getting too much screen time, and staying up longer than you should. The long term effects of these habits have been known to cause decrease sleep, increased weight and increased risk of depression.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT:

  • Set an alarm on your phone or where a device like a fitbit that will buzz you every 30 minutes to an hour. 30 minutes is better, but if you have a mentally stressful job that takes up your time, every hour will have to do.
  • Drink lots and lots of water. This of course helps to hydrate you and you will have to fill your glass every hour or so; this is great for getting up and walking around! Also, drinking water makes you go to the bathroom more, which will force you to get up and take a break from the desk.
  • Exercise. If you don’t know where to start, hire a trainer! If you don’t have the time, get our online coaching that will walk you through 3 months of training on your own.
  • Ask for a stand up desk – if you don’t ask, you’ll never know!
